I will first need to know how deep you want the mulch. An easy way to figure it is
lengh in feet x width in feet x depth in inches divided by 324.
This will tell you how many yards you need.
2cf bags there is 13.5 in a yard
3cf bags there is 9 in a yard

    two inches deep

    2cf bags there is 13.5 __________ (s) in a yard

So its 31'x5.5'x2" dived by 324?

    i get 1.05

ok first off you got the 31' times5.5' part right. that gives you 170.5 SQUARE FT.

Now if you want CUBIC FEET, or volume, you need your depth to go along with you length times width. You say the depth is 2 inches...you cannot just simply do 31'x5.5'x2". YOu have to convert the 2" to feet.

since there are 12 inches in a foot, and you need 2 inches, 12 divided by 2 gives you 6. You need a percentage of a foot. so 100% divided by 6 gives you .16666. round it up to .167 plug this into your formula now.

31'x5.5'x.167' and you come up with 28.4735 CUBIC FEET.

SO...if you were using 2 CU FT bags you'd need roughly 14-15 bags.
3 CU FT bags would require 9-10 bags.
