How tight should drive belts be on metro 36?

    This thing ain't pulling too good. I believe i had a small improvement a few months back when i tightened the belt underneath by adjusting pulley. I'm talking about the wide belts on both sides on the inside of the wheels. Someone else said he hardly ever replaces those unless he has too. I'm wondering if my transmission is just wearing out, or if i could solve problem by just replacing belts. Let me know how tight those things should be.

    If the transmission belt underneath the mower is tight...
    Adjust the rods that go from the handle levers to the pulley assy..
    There should be about a quarter inch of slack in the rods when fully released.
    If the rods are bottoming out in the slots...the belts will not fully engage.
    You may have to re adjust the brakes after you adjust the handle rods.

    I have the rods adjusted wrong; i just happened to see that bit in the manual. I changed the spring holes. I thought the top position would have been more tension, but the manual says the bottom position is more tension. I think i just need new belts. I tightened the transmission belt. Would the tightness on new belts be alot different than old belts? For these types of belts it wouldn't seem like they'd stretch out much. This morning i'm going to try it with the springs in the changed position. The belts seem a tiny bit tighter. We'll see.
