I have a small south-facing flower bed with mature iris bulbs in it. The soil has gotten hard packed over time. How do I break and improve the soil without harming the bulbs and plants? (The bulbs are 40-yr. old pass along plants that I want to keep) What kind of mulch/soil should I add?

    Pictures welcome.

Take the iris out. Cultivate and add soil amendment. Fertilize withbone meal. Replant iris, not too deep they like to have a little root exposed.
