Find a good subcontractor nearby. Locate a local sprinkler supply house and they should be able to recomend someone.

Read all the books you can get ahold of.

    1. Trench time apprenticing with a master irrigator.
    2. College or other appropriate classes to learn hydraulics.
    3. Manufacturer sponsored seminars.
    4. Classes that teach the relationship between water/soil/plant relationships.
    4. Books for simple systems. Books for advanced theory.
    5. Internet: http://www.irrigationtutorials.com/

As you can see there are plenty of places for a starting point.
