How would you build an inexpensive mulchspreader

Poll closed Jan 15, 2005.
  1. How wide and how long should it be?

  2. What options would you want on this equipment

  3. What would you pay for this maulcher

  4. Would you be willing to assemble it?

I built a mulch spreader and am not too happy with the spreading results. Some of the mulch ends up falling into the grass area (3-4 inches wide). The intend is to reduce manpower ($) but we loose too much time moving the spilt mulch into the bed. It is basically a small manure spreader (mounted sideways) that can hold between 1000 to 1800 and can be moved by a 20 horsepower lawn/garden tractor.

What, if you could build something in the $2000.00 range, would you want this mulcher to do to save you labor expenses?

BigEddy, form Ontario, Canada made the following contribution and at that a brilliant one:

Okay - if the blower / suction solution isn't what you are looking for, how about modelling it after a slinger truck?

Conveyor belt extending out 10' say, from a V Shaped hopper that mounts in place of the bucket. Using a pivot mechanism, you can get some sideways travel, or with the PT articulation you can also "turn" the belt to another spot.

Assuming you have hyro flow to the front, I'd use a hydraulic motor to drive the belt. Drive forward until the end of the conveyor is over the flower bed, engage the conveyor and "sling" some mulch onto the bed. Pivot the PT or move forward and back to distribute.

Or for better control, mount a remote valve at the end of a pivoting conveyor, then get off the seat (ugh) and stand at the conveyor, and control the position and flow from there.

Fantastic Some great thinking is going on this here Monday. Thank you very much for your contributions

What do you mean leave the perfectly good environment of the Rops environment of the Power Trac?

Do you think one could reverse the process and have the mulch move backwards (toward the driver) for better visibility and the control similar to the portable dumper controller?

This motorcycle hitch manufacturer has an interesting concept of scooping and spreading material:

do you guys think that could be converted for our Ultimate mulcher? :)

This could be converted to our needs. How would you like that next spring in your mulching crew?
