I am having a lot of trouble growing my hydragia plants. Is there any advise anyone can give me?

I know they like full to part sun, the top 3" of soil kept moist, and you must leave old wood if you want flowers. For pink flowers, just let it be. For vivid blue flowers, I sprinkle my coffee grounds around the base of the plant.
What zone are you in? Many hydrangeas won't do well colder than zone 4. The fancy colored ones won't survive in zone 3.
