I was cutting one of my new customer's yard last night and the husband comes out with last month's cheque. It's a smaller resi yard and I charge $20 a cut and I cut it 3 times last month. I'm expecting $60. I look at the cheque and it's made out for $200!! I tell the husband that I think its wrong. He says come talk to the wife. I go in say the cheque is wrong I only cut the yard 3 times. She says that's fine....just hang on to the extra for when all the yards aren't growing as much. I couldn't believe it!! You can guess who my new #1 customer is. They can call up at 5 am on a Sunday morning and I'll be there in and hour!!!

What does that exactly mean? I would have made things a little more clear at that time. Does it mean that when you don't have to cut, you can apply that toward that particular week? So they are giving you money for the times you don't have to cut.

Personally, I would call them back and make sure I knew exactly what they meant by this. I'm betting, the next time they get the bill, or are in a financial crunch of their own, they'll use that money as their crutch or there will probably be some confusion as to what it WAS really intended for. Too unstable of business practice for my comfort.

I know the family pretty well and I know they're on the up and up. After we finished the spring clean-up she gave us a $20 tip (on an $85 job). I understood exactly what she meant. I'm not on a yearly or monthly contract method. I charge for the times I cut and collect at the end of the month. She was clear on the price in the spring when we started. I think they are just being generous.

So in otherwords, your customer intended the extra $140.00 as a TIP??!!?? Definately make that customer your FIRST priority.

We actually get quite a few tips on clean-up jobs. I open the mail & find a check for $20 - $50 more than the amount of the invoice.

I ususally consider it beer money & pick-up extra beer for Mark.

Nice customers are the ones we all need more of. Sounds like you have a real keeper there. Keep up the good work!

Sounds like you're doing a good job. Did you ever pick up that account I sent your way? I hear she likes to give the boys lunch.
