I think I Just Got "BobbyGedded"

    You guys may have seen my dilema over on the landscaping forum.
    Customer has a EFIS home.Hired a Mexican to do the work.EFIS is still below grade and they call me.My first thought is a French drain.After further investigation,it was looking more like a "rip it all out and start over"deal.
    So I call a friend who is a general contractor.He says it's an easy fix and they'll help,but it'll be 3-6 weeks before they can get to it.
    Well,I let the customer know this is the cheapest way to get the job done and explain what all needs to be done.(They're selling their home and just want it to pass inspection)Tonight I get a call from the customer saying basically,"thanks,but no thanks">It appears that now that they know what to do they're getting the Mexican to do it.
    Now for the even better part.I mow their lawn.I'm loosing money because I underbid it when I started.I wonder if this is standard operating proceedure for these folks?
    So,would you raise their rates for mowing?Keep in mind I'm not swamped with accounts,but I'm also not hurting for money.

    I wouldn't raise their rate for mowing because it sounds like they wouldn't use you anymore. This is one of the things I would try to "deal" with and then try to get the house when the new homeowner moves in. Maybe when the new homeowner moves in you can up the rate then.

    Heck yeah I'd raise their rate. Not because you didn't get the landscaping job, but because there's no reason you should not make money mowing for them. Two separate issues there in my book. If they don't like it, see ya later. All you'd be losing is someone who obviously doesn't value your hard work, they just want it done cheap.

    BTW, Bummer on not getting the job, I was looking forward to seeing you'r finished product after reading everything in the landscaping forum.

    Well if its a new customer, and they are fixing to move, up the rate now. If they dump you, they will just get the mexican to mow it. Then when the new people move in then you can get them to sign on with you.

    Now that I reread it more carefully ZACH76 is totally right. I didn't realize you are loosing money on this account. Never keep an account you are loosing money on. I was referring to "deal with it" assuming that you were making money but not quite as much as you would like on it.

    Good point on the new homeowner!I was planning on raising the rate for them.It slipped my mind or I lost focus on the larger picture.
    I worked all week calling different folks and even got o-so-n-so to come up here to look at it.That was a 45 mile drive,one way ,for him.(It did give us a chance to meet and discuss ideas though) I gotta chalk this up as a learning experience I think.I know what I've learned.Just not too sure how to go about it differently next time.
    I gotta feeling this goes on alot with this type of work and with construction in general.Way back when they told me they had an EFIS specialist coming to look at the problem.I'm betting they did the same to him.Got the idea for the fix and got the Mexican to do the work.

    Well,I can afford to lose the money.Not that I WANT to lose money.I have actually been thinking that once they sell the house,I'll raise the rate.No way is a homeowner gonna tackle this lawn for long.It's got one heck of a slope in the back.My 21 inch slides down the hill going crossways against the slope if that gives ya an idea.That's why I'm losing money.Takes alot longer with that slope.The rest is easy.
    Now I gotta ponder how long I'm willing to lose the money also.
    OH YEAH!One more thing.The Mexican WAS mowing before they called me.She let his name slip when I was giving the estimate.It's the same guy.They didn't like the work he was doing as well as the fact they couldn't understand him.This gets stranger and stranger..................

    They don't like the job he was doing mowing, he screwed up once before on the landscape, and now they are gonna have him implement your idea just to save a few bucks. Run Forrest run.
