I have to place a bid on installing patio stone but I don't know how to bid it. The area needs to be graded (by hand) and it's 480 sq ft. He wants to use a stone that is 16x16 inch. The grading alone will probably take at least a day since it needs a lot of prepping. I have an employee who has 10 yrs experience doing this type of work but has no expierence on placing estimites. He did landscaping for another company. He is the one that told me it would take about a day to grade and prep the ground. So basically I need help charging for the labor. Do I charge by the sq ft or by the hour?

I WOULD ESTIMATE THE NUMBER OF HOURS TIMES YOUR RATE AND YOUR EMPLOYEE. FOR EXAMPLE:
    YOU - 32.00/hr
    EE - 18.00/hr
    $50.00/hr
    50.00 X 16hrs = $800.00
THEN ADD COST OF MATERIAL WITH YOUR MARK-UP: 600.00?
ADD IT ALL TOGETHER, THEN ESTIMATE A RANGE TO COVER YOUR BUTT.
    800.00 + 600.00 = 1400.00
    ESTMATE FOR CUSTOMER: $1400.00 - $1800.00

All work is charged at the same rate. What since is being in business if you do not profit from employees. If your rate is 32 per- it is 32 for ALL hours, no matter who is setting stone.

I price by the sq ft
it depends on the block being used price and easy of install
    man made vs natural
    and other factors included
