9 times out of 10 when I have to repair existing...I expose fittings butted together for no
    apparent reason other than laziness.

Is it a rule that installers leave no extra space to allow for...heaven forbid ..A REPAIR !!!
To be fair, these are all 25 yr+ apartment complexes, and the same shoddy workmanship that is
common in the buildings themselves, trickled down to the irrigation systems.

So is it helping you make money or is it hindering your money making?

Years ago I would run into contractors that would butt sprinklers up against foundations, sidewalks and any other immovable object. Often the sprinkler head would be tilted and unable to be straightened without tearing out everything they did, installing a new swing joint and then setting a new sprinkler properly. When butted against sidewalks they would tilt throwing way too much water on the concrete (or puddling badly in front of the sprinkler head) and be subjected to cutting/whacking by edgers and/or line trimmers. We now have in our specs that all parts of a sprinkler head (including the swing joints) shall be a minimum of 4" from any immovable object.

^^^ Additionally... it seems that sprinklers that are not leveled properly (especially spray pop-ups) tend to stick more often, subjecting them to mowers.
