Over the years I have been asked what I do for a living and respond that I do landscaping. They say, oh I bet you have been busy mowing with all the rain or something that is about mowing. I say no I don't mow but I landscape like build retaining walls, put in plants and paver patios. I could say hardscaping but most people wouldn't have a clue. Lately, all the guy that apply to work for me also think mowing is what we do and I even put in the ad that we build things with no mention of mowing but first thing they say is that they have experience and then ask if they have built patios and retaining walls and say no I have mowed and can run a weed eater.

I don't get it. Wouldn't lawn care be the business that mows yards and the landscaping be the business that builds and installs the landscape. I know some do mowing with landscaping but almost every landscape company in our area does not do any mowing.

Do you guys think of mowing as being wrongly classified by the majority of people or do you call mowing part of landscaping?

I am just trying to figure out where the majority of people got the idea that mowing is landscaping. It just boggles my mind. You are not changing the land at all when you mow.

It could be all the starts ups that call them selves "so&so landscapes" but only mow and blow.

Your spot on about the difference between the two. My business is _______ Lawn care, because that's what I provide. Lawn care, as in weekly/ bi weekly maintenance, clean ups, fert/ chem apps& so on. Sure I do some landscaping, but not like the waterfall setups at Daryl's mini storage haha. We leave that type of thing to the landscapers.

I'd probably cut the convo short by saying "we only do installs, not ground maintenance"

Technically if you were to strictly adhere to the true definition of " landscaping" lawn mowing and lawn care is inclusive you guys can argue about this all day but that will not change the facts. So you landscapers out their stick you egos in your back pocket and accept the facts.

I get just the opposite, I don't do landscaping. I maintain what is already existing.

That's why I named my business. ---masonry and landscapes. Around here landscapING is synonymous with mow n go.

    I keep it simple.

    "I'm a contractor"
