Is this happening to you?

Is it just me this year, or is this happening more to everybody? I am having more people than ever pay us in payments, without telling us or asking us. On larger jobs where it may be a manifold or mainline repair due to freezing, or multiple repairs that take up a few hours, we tend to send a bill to the customer. Especially when the job has more repairs than anticipated. Or if the customer is not home when we do the work.

I am having a lot of people just send in partial payment, with no explanation or phone call. I'm not a bank or a lender of money. Pay up, *@#&$!

    Yes.

Also an increase in people disappearing for 60 days or more and then sending in the payment all at once. Seems like everyone has cash flow issues.

We've run into the same problem...wtf? $2200 bill gets us a $250 check... then installments?

it could be worse, you could be getting NO money...after the work. I guess you can always tack on service charges, or better yet...offer payment terms. @ 10%-20% APR...At least get a return on your investment....

Make sure that the invoice state clearly the terms and any any fees for balances not paid in full by the due date...

i've never had as many, slow or no paying jobs as the last 3 yrs.

what gets me is that some of these people are calling for more work but, they don't like my terms.

Slow or no pay voids any warranties, as far as I'm concerned. It also puts the "client" off the "we'll be right there" list. :hammerhead:

Oh yes, they will be on the end of any schedule list from that point on. And I do remember who is slow paying. I used to keep an updated list of slow pays, but stopped doing it.

Russ is caught up in one (luckily not a very large billing) where there is a messy divorce going on. On stuff like that, I always figured a lien or small claims was not worth my time, though up here you can file a lien online now.

Slow pay earns slow response in my book.

Honestly though if they pay you, I wouldnt complain too loudly. Better than getting stiffed, or not getting the work at all.

Just remember it next time they call needing something and adjust how you handle them.
