I agree with the stupid management of Albertson's. We (ACME Markets) were the #1 most profitable Independent East Coast based food retailer for several years. American Stores, Scaggs, and Alberston's all seemed to think that THEIR way of doing things was better. We got yanked around like soap-on-a-rope in a gay locker room. What works in Boise or Salt Lake City, will always work in the Delaware Valley (Philadelphia Tri-State Area). There are ways to run a company, and ways to run one into the ground. I agree with the survival of the fittest comment, but I've seen entirely too many local economies/businesses plunder with the addition of a Wal-Mart within a 10 mile radius. They're big, they're bad, and they don't play by the rules. You play by THEIR rules, or you don't get to play. Costco is a membership based sub retail outlet. They're not in the same boat as Wal-Mart, Albertson's, and Target. Costco is actually a GOOD (non Union) company to work for. With competitive wages and benefit packages. The retail food business is changing without a doubt. I personally don't like the way it's going. The old ways of knowing your local Grocer, Butcher, Produce clerk down at your local supermarket are going away. In it's place is $7/hr help that only knows enough to put product A on shelf 17c and repeat. Sorry for the off topic tangent!
