So how important is owning 4wd if you don't use it for plowing? My 77 f350 4x4 dump is only used a few times a year. Pulling out bushes and occasional getting stuck somewhere.

I'm looking on buying a newer Ford(97-200?) F350-450. There's less parts to wear out, slight better fuel ecnomy, maybe cheaper ins on 2wd, higher hauling capicity.

    Pro's /cons/

  2. we plow, but use it for off road work

i plow in a 2wd 550. just be smart. towed out plenty of guys that had 4wd and yes, even I've been stuck.

so unless you're in the mud often, I don't think its necessary

Do you never ever leave the pavement?

Do you ever have to use it when the snow gets bad?

Thing is I want 4wd and don't want the regret if I get stuck if I had a 2wd.

Gas mileage is not much better with a 2wd. Less resale value. In the end buy what you need and can afford.

I have 3 dump trucks. A 2005 GMC Sierra 3500, a 2009 GMC Sierra 3500, and a 4500 Chevy Kodiak. They are all dump trucks and all 2wd. I do not plow, but I have driven them around in the snow. I would never purchase 4wd for a dump truck at least in my opinion. I dont leave the road much. I have driven around in grass before, but if you have a steel body there is alot of weight there, and if it really is bad out fill it up with rock or sand. Just me 2 cents

I have a '94 F-350 dually. Been a great truck even for 2 wheel drive. I run street tires which I think makes a big diffrence. Mine is supposedly limited slip, but if there's a banana peel in the parking lot across the street I am stuck with it when light.

I just recently got a 2009 sierra 3500 4x4 with plow a dump an sale spreader. I havent had a chance to plow with it yet thoe.

I have ran several years/engine/configerations of f250s an of them all without 4wd its a pain in the but to plow.

I like having the 4wd, and knowing its there if I need it.

4x4 personally i don't see the point in 2wd truck. I dont care if its a 1500 or a 5500. True you don't need it a ton but man i sure is nice to have.
