    What is the GVWR?

If it's over 10,000 (I'll assume it is), you need to go to http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/
and apply for a number. Then let the fun begin.

If you don't have a medical card, call your doc and go and get one ASAP!

my cabover has a gvwr of 12,000 pounds. i was told by a state trooper that i did not need dot numbers or any special requirement before 26,001 pounds. i do have a weighted tag rated for 12000 pounds......

Yup, no DOT numbers in NC for those vehicles.... not sure about Alabama, but you can find out at the fmcsa site
