My JD LX 176 has a new battery in it, but the battery light is still on. It's not charging the battery at all. Any suggestions what it might be?

I have had bad, off the shelf "NEW" batteries, starters, alternators, etc. etc.
Charge battery, without cooking it, check the _LOADED_ battery voltage while starter is turning, use Vdc setting on meter, around , oh , say 12V range. You may need to pull plug cable(s) from plugs so it won't start.
Next turn ignition off, re-connect plug wires, start engine and check the battery voltage while it runs at 60% throttle. No need to cut grass, transport or any thing else. Just rev 'er up.
