I saw a 2005 JD 657 stander with a 54" deck, 23 kawa engine with about 430 hours. He is asking $3000. It looks in good shape just a little dirty. It seems like a good deal. What do you guys think? Are these good mowers?

2005...does it have a 7 iron or 7 iron II? I'm assuming just the regular 7 Iron. I think it's a decent price but I've never used their standers.

I don't think there's much difference in the two. I had an 04 657 and a 07 737. Both 54 and took the same blades. Looked the same to me

I paid 3k for my 2006 647a (19 hp kawi, 48") with 250 hrs IIRC. I would do it again. It hasn't given me any issues except for the carb but we are at 6,500' and I did some jetting changes.

Well, it is the same deck, but I believe changes in blade tip speed and a bit on the baffles were made different from the 7 Iron to the 7 Iron II.

I went from a 2005 757A with 7 Iron to a 2011 925A with 7 Iron Pro, both 60" decks same blades but huge difference in cut and clipping discharge. Probably mostly due to higher blade speed.

A 6 year old machine, 400+ hours on it, dated (not bad) deck and old style...I'd say its not worth $3000.

How dirty is the machine? How dirty a machine is can help to tell you how well it was taken care of. For instance, there is a difference between being dirty from working and just being dirty because it has never been blown off, cleaned up or maintained that well. Most people who maintain their equipment will blow it off at the end of the day or each week, just to keep debris from building up and settling into places where it doesn't belong. Plus, if you are trying to sell something, usually you try to clean it up before selling it.

Anyway, I'd say its worth $2500 at the most, mainly because it is 6 years old and is a completely out dated model (old deck and old design style).

Thanks guys for all your help! Im thinking I wont mess with this one just because its not an absolute great deal. I dont wont to deal with negotiating because in the end i would probably prefer something else anyways. Thanks again.

Thanks mowerbrad. I couldnt really tell about the dirt. I think just hitting it with the hose would make it shine more. I think your right about it though. $2500 popped in my head also. Thanks for your help man.
