john deere 737 ztr w/ blown motor

    I have a jd 737 ztrack w/ 600 hrs on that the motor blew last week. John deere wants $2700 for the motor. The other repair shops in town say they cant get that motor or one that will fit, you can only get it thru john deere. Has anybody run into this problem before? Any way around spending that kind of money? HELP PLEASE

    what motor is it horsepower/ brand name?

    I have a 23horse kawi on my 737 that has been rebuilt twice. I was able to rebuild it both times for $250 or less. Both failures were due to valve breaking and going through the piston. The first rebuild was around the 1800 hr mark. Second was 2300.

    I say that to say, you may look at it and see just what all would have to be replaced to just rebuild it.?? Just another option

    23 hp kawi with 1 1/16" crank. the motors the other repair shops can get have either 1" or 1 1/8" crank and the cost is $1600. Only jd sells 1 1/16" crank. $1100 for 1/16"

    Yes, that is why I will not buy another JD cause EVERYTHING has to be from them. One little thing is different about everything on that mower.

    Do you know what actually failed in the engine, caused it?

    thanks wple, I was told by one place that the rebuild was just as expensive but sounds like that may be the better way to go. I will look into that more tomorrow.

    This is also my last deere. Lack of oil caused it. A motor will run without oil but not for long. It must have been burning it, there is no oil on the trailer or in the garage and there is dang sure none in the motor. I have been injured for the past 3 months and not staying on top of maintenance as I should and without seeing a oil leak I just ASSumed.

    I did the labor myself so that helped out alot. Labor will eat you up. The first failure was due to metal fatigue but the second one was caused by me not cleaning out the shroud like needed. If you don't have any friends that could help you that are mechanically sound or do it yourself, it may be alot to do the rebuild if you have to pay a shop to do it. I am very blessed to have a grandfather who is a small engine genius so he was able to help me.

    Buy an electric clutch to match, and have a machine shop bore out other pulleys.

    Big PIA but the clutch is probably also worn.


    This is why I'm done with gasser junk. Once you go diesel you never go back.

    (Deere 997 my ride these days).

    I'm with Albemarle Lawn. Either get the new engine with the 1 1/8" crank and adjust the clutch and pulleys or have the 1 1/8" crank turned at a machine shop to 1 1/16". Machine shop can do that easily.
