I was told by my local JD dealer that the reason thier blade tip speed was 16000 rpm's vs most others at around 18000 rpm's was due to thier lowering it so they can increase the lifespan of thier spindles. He mentioned that because of thier deck they did not need the extra rpm's
Does anyone buy that or am I being sold here?

What is the JDs spindle housing made of ? Sounds to me like it is probably cast aluminum . Are they using a sealed type of bearing ?

No there are not sealed spindles and I can tell you first hand my JD Z's still throw out clippings just as far as any of my other mowers and cuts wonderful with never any clumping and the tip speed is set at 16,800

What RPM do they set their engines at?

    That makes a big difference.

They may still be using 3600 RPM, while DC, eXmark and others use 3750.

    i agree,
if the tip speed is that much different, you would never know it by the cut I get. also, JD throws clippings so damn far its hard to control where they end up. some times way over 10 feet. either way tip speed won't sell me on anything else, JD used to be way behind the others now I think the others better either catch up or get out of the way, better cut, single blades, no clipping build up under the decks, I would say JD is on to something here.

I like my 757 so much I bought another one. Looking to order a new 997 with a 72" deck this fall. Blade tip speed doesn't mean jack, if the mower doesn't leave a nice cut. I could careless what JD has for blade tip speed, its the beutifull cut that keeps me buying JD with 7 Iron decks.
