School site has been without irrigation water since last Saturday when the 4" main line blew out. We were notified Monday mid-morning of the problem and did some initial hand digging to verify that the break was under a public sidewalk. I lost my Bobcat operator for two days of training and we finally got out there today with the Bobcat backhoe to verify that the problem is too far back under the concrete to handle without removal of a section of the sidewalk. Now we'll have to wait until Maintenance Department gets out there and saw-cuts the sidewalk so we can remove the concrete and make repairs. Meanwhile... the fescue in the front of the school is starting to look REAL stressed with some brown spots showing up and that general gray cast to the grass. It'll be interesting to see how much pressure is put on them so we can do our repair work. :)

A better question would be, "Why didn't they continue the main line straight?"

Use the attached pictures as a guide. They veered to go under the public sidewalk for about 20' and then came back into a grass area again (would be on other side of 10' sidewalk to the left in first picture). My assumption is that there was a lack of communication and this sidewalk leading to the office was poured before the main line was installed. Since the public sidewalk hadn't been poured yet they just routed underneath it instead of boring.

This main pushes about 200 GPM at about 80 PSI.

The way our district works I'm surprised they didn't hire a "little person" to live in the sidewalk "cave" and keep his finger in the hole. :dizzy:

We removed the concrete and made the repair yesterday. Were able to partially backfill and then we ran out of time for the day. We still need to pour two thrust blocks on Monday and then totally backfill after that.

Good news was that we found (no asbuilts... as usual) two isolation resilient wedge valves that were able to isolate the west side of the site. We were able to turn most of the system back on with the exception of four fairly large zones in the area we are working. By the time we get everything up and running I'm sure there will have to be a little overseeding done as the fescue has taken a real hit.
