Kaw 13HP Twin Cycl. Starts Hard

    I was getting ready to put the new clutch on and to install the deck when I saw a puddle of oil.

    Yep new lower seal leaking. Guess I must have got burr on shaft and didnt notice. Another rookie error.

    Got the new lower seal in and got the engine mounted but the clutch mounting bolt wouldn't thread in. So had to run a tap into it. I know one thing having the deck off made putting the clutch in doable.

    I had to put a new clutch in. Does anyone have advise about how to run the clutch in? The last one lasted 3 months so I got to cover all bases. I have marked the throttle lever position for engaging it in the field.
    Oh, took the unit out and cut a couple passes......engine sounds good.

    You ain't a rookie and stuff happens to the best. As for the clutch I wasn't aware of a break in on electric ones. Why the other only lasted 3 months is not normal. Cheap import part maybe? Defective from the factory? Do you engage at full throttle or do you do the idle down method some guys swear by? If its not getting full voltage it can fail prematurely. Was it installed with a BFH?

    No big hammer used on last clutch. The first clutch went almost 4 years and second one 3 months. Rivets pulled loose, and no warranty. This unit was probably being engaged at full rpm. This setup has two pulleys so you change pulleys based on height. The exposure with these units is we mulch year round. Occasionally a clean get on the list and they don't take off plate.

    I over hauled this 4 year old kawasaki engine because it was buring oil and was hard to start. I think the engines wear is made worse because they get to much dust in them. You can see in the second photo how much dust is on that filter after just a few hours of operation. So I got a scrap cannister filter from the dealer and put it on.

    I'm a firm believer in all these engines having big filters and oiled prefilters.
