I've got an 05 Kaw 17hp on my Toro w/b and wanted to find out how often the valves should be adjusted on this engine. I've got about 100 hours on it and it runs fine, I'm just anal about maintaining stuff and want to be sure I'm not overlooking anything.

Other than gas, oil and filters, is there anything these engines require?

You can look in your owners manual but I believe it states either 250 or 350 hours...it will be an easy adjustment incase you have never adjusted valves before.

The manual says every 300 hrs. It also states to clean combustion chamber at that interval as well.

I checked the manual but didn't see the specs. I'll have to look again as I clearly missed it...

I wonder if they give tolerances or if the shop manual has to be purchased for that info.

Ok, from my kawisaki owners manual, the following specs are for a FH500V:
    Valve Clearance: Intake - 0.004 ~ 0.006in
    Exhaust - 0.004 ~ 0.006in

This is to be adjusted every 300 hours, manual says to clean combustion chamber (unnessecary IMO) and lap valve seating surface at the same time. So you probably do not need to adjust the valves on your engine quite yet :waving:
