I have been having a problem of hard to start. Pulled 50 frigging times, nothing. Pulled again fired right up. Runs great when I can get it started. I removed the carb and did what I thought was a good cleaning and same problem. Just bought a brand new recoil starter assy and today it got ripped out of my hand by the possessed motor so hard that the handle snapped off, in 100 degree heat and I thought i seen a couple of my fingers stall attached to it and it flew to infinity! Anyway, should I but another recoil assy and a new carb or is there some other issue I don't know about this engine. It's on an Encore Proline Hydro walkbehind. Sorry for the long post. :hammerhead:

    Thanks,
    Mikeeee

Sounds like you have a timing issue.....

I'd be for checking the valve clearance and flywheel key, Although it's not very common for a belt drive unit to partly shear a key it's still possible.

It runs perfect when I can get it to start. Just hard to start. Backfires sometimes when trying to start then will fire right up. Could it still be slightly out of time? I have to remove the complete engine cover to check for a broken key correct?

Yep, You may be able to remove the flywheel retainer and look at the keyway grooves in the crank and flywheel for alignment...

More than likely it's either the valves out of adj., defeating the compression release, or the compression release mechanism on the cam is out to lunch.

How old is the engine ?

I agree with Rob and Fish.....Valve adjustment...possibly flywheel key...
If that doesnt work....take it by your local Padre and have him say a few nice words to it....Couldn't Hurt...
