How important is it to do valve adjustments? My
owners manual recommends it every 300 hrs. The engine
is a 23hp kawasaki FH680v. Is this a service you can
perform yourself or would you recommend the dealer?

If you have tools, you can do it yourself. You might wanna pick up some valve cover gaskets before you do the job...just in case you tear them coming off. They do like to tear alot...for me anyway. You will need a set of feeler gauges, some mentric wrenches and metric hex keys(I think).

I dont know how vital it is. I highly doubt most people ever do it. They never ask me about it or about doing it. I doubt they have ever read a kawasaki owners manual.

As pugs stated not too many people do this adjustment until they have run/performance problems, If you are in the off season it won't hurt to go ahead and do it. Think of it as "preventative maintenance" and it could save down time in the peak of season.
