I have a 61" scag mower with a 27 hp engine. The unit is smoking and goes through about 2 quarts a day. The compression on both sides is about 145, the book says they should be about 170. I think it points to ring and/or pistons, although both sides have about the same compression ratio. The pistons and rings are a bear to replace because the book says you have to pull the motor to get to the pistons. Any suggestions? Also if I have to buy a engine any reccomendatons for good prices on new and rebuilt. Thanks much

do a top end rebuild. 2 new pistons and rings. DO NOT continue to run the mower. cuz if you blow a hold in the side of it then you'll have to replace the whole engine. a new top end if you do it yourself should run you about 250

You need to perform and cylinder leak down test on both cylinders and that should help point you in the right direction.
