    The Kentucky Forest Industries Association (KFIA) recently completed a successful 48th Annual Meeting in Lexington, Kentucky at the Embassy Suites. The meeting was held April 3-5, 2013 and was well attended by 320 members. The KFIA Annual Meeting serves as the premier event for the hardwood industry in Kentucky and got underway with a great day of golf.

    Thursday started with the Board of Directors taking care of association business and was followed by the KFIA/Tree Farm Awards Luncheon. The luncheon provided an opportunity to honor a wide range of individuals that help to make forestry and the wood industry a big success throughout the state. The following people were recognized for their contributions to forestry in Kentucky:

    Perry Sebaugh, Park City, KY – 2012 Tree Farmer of the Year
    French Logging LLC, Webster, KY – 2012 Logger of the Year
    Hagan Wonn, Somerset, KY- 2012 Inspector of the Year

    KFIA recognized the following people for their leadership and service to the KFIA Board of Directors:
    Charles “Chuck” Courtney II, Greenville, KY – 2012 Communicator of the Year
    James Newman, Lexington, KY – Outstanding Leadership for 48 years with the William B. Steele
    Scholarship Fund

    The following people were elected to the 2013 KFIA Board of Directors:
    President— Henry Christ, Dunaway Timber Co. - Fordsville, KY
    Vice President— Darrin Gay, Gay Brothers Logging & Lumber -Oneida, KY
    Secretary/Treasurer— Yvonne A. Bradley, Homer Gregory & Co. - Morehead, KY

    Re-elected Directors: Gary Ballard, Estill Wood Products - Ravenna, KY
    Tom DeFilippo, H & S Lumber Co. – Clay City, KY
    David James, Domtar Paper Co. - Hawesville, KY
    Tommy Steele, Kentucky Tie & Lumber Co. – Columbia, KY

    The afternoon included meetings discussing the current regulations dealing with Boiler MACT and Sustainable Forestry Implementation in Kentucky, as usual tradition, everyone enjoyed the Robinson Lumber/ Van Meter Insurance Hospitality Suite with great seafood and special cuisine straight from New Orleans. The day concluded with the Exhibitor Reception and plenty of time to see some of the latest technology and services being offered to the wood industry.

    Friday morning opened with a state legislative and association update by KFIA Executive Director Bob Bauer. Other conference speakers were Bill Luppold, US Forest Service discussed the affect the lumber market is having on the forest resource and future harvests. Jeff Stringer, UK Dept. of Forestry provided a review of a recent study concerning the value of the wood products industry in Kentucky. Carlyle Holman showed that in attendance the latest technology in wood treatment and its use in hardwoods. The meeting concluded with a trip to Keeneland Race Track for an afternoon of horse racing at its finest.

    The meeting was a tremendous success and those in attendance gained valuable information while having time to network with others in the hardwood industry from throughout the country. KFIA is pleased to announce that the 2014 Annual Meeting will be in Louisville, KY at The Brown Hotel on April 2-4.

    KFIA is a trade association dedicated to serving and promoting the forest products industry of Kentucky. Founded in 1965, it has over 600 members in the areas of primary and secondary wood industry, supplier and service industries, wholesale, loggers and landowners.
