Last year my 52 hydro kees kohler engine started to smoke and burn oil real bad, so I put a brand new one on, I was wondering how hard and if its worth rebuiling the old engine and if so how much for a rebuild kit ?????]'

A new engine costs around $1300 I think so yes I believe it is worth it to rebuild the old one but only if you can do it yourself. I'm not really sure how much the rebuild kit is but after buying the parts and paying the dealer labor then it would not be coming out that far ahead. Hope this helps.

A new Kohler Magnum 20 is about $1900 from S.E.W.

That $1300 is for a Command 20 horizontal shaft from Northern tool.

I don't know much about the newer Kohlers (I know the old K-series pretty good), but what is the difference between the Command and Magnums?

The Magnums are horizontal shaft 8,12, and 16 hp single cylinder engines and the commands are single and v twin vertical shaft and v twin horizontal shaft engines.

If your old motor on your mower has a cast iron block u can rebuild it. If it does not, do not rebuild it. The motors they build today are made of aluminum and they warp cuz of the heat. Rebuilding is not best. You can into more problems on down the road.
