Looking at buying a demo 60" XR-7 Hustler Super Z with 9 hours. I have been told that smoke on start-up is normal, and is the "nature of Kohler". I am getting a good dose of smoke after trailering unit to next property upon start-up. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Other than the smoke, this unit is sweet!

There may be a problem with the "reed valves" on the heads.
This is a warranty item and is a known issue with Kohler engines.

In that hour range I would get a smokey first few minutes every once and a while. Don't remember when it wen't away, but nothing in the past 150 some hours.

If I did not know anybetter reed valves are on 2 strokes and not 4 strokes.

    They're on the crankcase breathers.

Hey Tommy...that was what the distributor had told me as well. It is some break in thing. Thanks for the reply. Hope all is well up your way.

Just about every small air cooled 4 stroke engine uses a reed valve to let air out of the crankcase but not back in...
