Kohler CV730S, CV730-0017 25HP

    Broke a rod and damaged block and oil pan. Is it worth the effort to port good components into used block and pan. Or should I scrap it. The engine is on a Craftsman GT5000 with 48 in cut deck.

    I don't know why it broke a rod. I am told there was oil in the engine at the time of failure due to the large quantity that was expelled through the crack in the block.

    Does this engine have a high failure rate ?
    I found a block and oil pan- used, in good condition for less than $300 locally. Is it worth the effort to port over the crank, pistons, cam, etc.

    I have a Briggs 24HP OHV engine available that I paid $75, it runs good, is it possible to swap ? I don't see that this model Craftsman came with Briggs. The model number for the mower is missing.

    Inquiring minds want to know.

    Not sure what....port over...means....
    The Kohler engine is probably gonna cost more than the mower is worth..
    New rings and gasket set is around $200.....and a used block is only as good as the one checking it out...
    Measure the crank and find a Briggs....
