    Hello Everyone,

    I have a 25hp kohler engine that is burning oil in one cylinder. It is leaving the plug wet and burning about a quart of oil every couple of days. Any ideas on what it could be?

    Thanks,
    Calvin

    Sounds like a possible broken breather reed on that side.....

    It's located between the two lifters, The gasket in this pic is obstructing view ;

    How hard is it to get to this part and check it out? Also what does the part cost look like?

    Thanks,
    Calvin

    Your rings are shot. Probably need to short block it

    Zack, That's a pretty bold statement..... When's the last time you found "shot" rings only in ONE cylinder ?

    Calvin,

    There's two common causes for a oil soaked plug on only one cylinder, A cracked/broken breather reed or a internally blown head gasket at the oil return port. A compression or cylinder leak-down test would confirm.....

    Removal of the head is required to service the breather reed at which time the head gasket can the checked, If one head gasket is blown I'd replace both sides while the engine is tore down that far for the other is short lived.

    Kohler has had head gasket issues, The newest design is steel and comes as a "kit". It takes two kits, One for each cylinder. Your looking around the $50/60 range for the kits......

    Did some of those engines employ a coated aluminum cylinder instead of cast iron liners?

    Some have a steel sleeve with what's called a nikasil coating, There's no oversized pistons/rings offered for nikasil bores that I'm aware of.......
