Customer wants lava rock installed in beds. The estimate iinvolves cleaning up beds, installing aluminum edging sold in 8ft sections, hauling way debris and laying the lava rock. Estimate is completed and ready to be submitted. The only issue is the amount of time it takes for a couple of guys to put down a ton of lava rock. The lava rock will be dumped fairly close to all the beds as the property is pretty small. I went very high on this part of the estimate as I am only used to working with mulch and not lava rocks. I would rather not get the job than underbid something like this. So what is a reasonable amount of time for two guys to install a ton of lava rock?

So you are saying, 2 guys can bang out a ton of lava rock in a half hour. Sounds reasonable, should be about 4-5 hrs. to do 8 tons.

Well I'm figuring a ton to be about a yard (how we do things over here). And thats only a couple wheelbarrows. So it should be done even faster. I did 4 yards of topsoil in an hour with two guys and that was wheeling to a back yard. Thats if all your prep is figured separately and done ahead of time

You have 8 tons or 1 ton to put down?

8 tons. The supply company said 1 ton of lava rock equals 1 and 1\2 yards. The job in general is a pita, but there is money too be made.

12 yds of lava rock is a fairly big pile when dumped on the property... you're going to use it as mulch around plants in a bunch of small beds, on a property not that large...

spreading lava rock around the base of plants in beds is tedious and time consuming unless you're planning on a reckless job... 2 guys for 2 days... minimum...
