I have 2000sq ft. of centepede that was sodded about 3 years ago. They hauled in some "top soil" smoothed it and layed the sod. The soil is very hard about 1'' down and the grass wilts in hot weather despite my irrigation efforts.Last year I areated and top dressed with some peat which helped a little.Any suggestions.

    Thanks, Glenn Middle GA

Layering soils is about the dumbest thing anyone could do. Your best bet without tearing up the lawn and starting from scratch is to start a yearly deep tine aeration and compost top dress.

continue with more aeration and top dressing. depending on where you are at you may simply need to be putting more water in hot periods if it is still wilting.
