Lawn & Landscaping Department

    I have been thinking about dividing our lawn & landscaping department into two seperate departments. Usually our lawn care guys do the landscaping work as well.

    We maintain a lot of customers lawns as well as their landscaping. We just hired on a new landscaping manager and we are thinking about turning over the responsbility of the landscaping maintenance to him. Now keep in mind that the landscaping maintenance is very small to us compared to our lawn care.

    I was just wondering, whether or not I should make two departments now?

    How many accounts do you have? From all of those how many always want you to do extra work? also how many workers do you have in total??? trucks?

    Landscaping maintenance & Lawn care?
    How are you differeniating?

    We've kept them separate for 9 years now. Guys that mow do not do mulch, prunning, bed maintenance, weeding, etc. And vice versa...it's called QUALITY CONTROL.

    So you are calling lawn care- the mowing ONLY
    Landscape maintenance- everything else.

    Which one does fert and turf weed fit in?

    The guy i work for has a crew of landscapers and a crew of lawn maintainence guys. Depending on the work load he divides up the vehicals and men as needed.

    the lawn care department for us for include: mowing, fertilization, dethatching, aeration.

    the landscaping department for us would be: pruning, landscaping maintenance, landscaping installation, etc.

    Usually we have the lawn care crew work on the rainy days at the landscaping projects and some sunny as well, if time. But lately we just picked up about 12 more lawn care customers the past week and the landscaping maintenance has kind of taken a back seat. We just hired on a Master Gardener and I think that I would like him to totally take care of the landscaping department. Like I said, the landscaping area is only about 5% of our gross revenue compared to the lawn care, so it is basically small. But the hassle of having to schedule the landscaping time around the lawn care time is not working out at all. That is why I would like to divide it and have the Master Gardener by in charge of scheduling the landscaping maintenance.

    Landscape Maintenance (which I oversee).

    BTW, I have a General Foreman who oversees all the mowing activities and scheduling.

    We have construction crews and maintenance crews ... maintenance crews will also install small landscapes ..usually ones that don't take any power equipment.
    At one time we had a 3k minimum for construction, but now maintenance crews can do these and smaller.
