    Hello,

I have a leak coming from the backflow preventor where the brass turns into PVC, I have included a picture. The crack has formed at the top of the connection. What would be the best way to repair this? Also my dad was wondering what the red cap/filter is for?

    Thanks,
    Calvin

I can't get the second picture to load so I will take a different one tomorrow.

    Thanks,

The "red thing" is a drain.
When there is water pressure it seals off, when pressure drops to a certain point it will open and allow the water in the pipe to drain. It is used to prevent water in the pipe from freezing.

Here is a picture of the crack. The screwdriver is pointing to the crack.

And they do occasionally fail. It sometimes will trickle water out even when it is supposed to be sealed off. They are also called "auto drains" or "king drains' as King is one brand that makes them.

  6. Cut out and reinstall the whole thing. Use sch 80 TOE nipples coming off the back flow.
