I had a customer call and said a lightning strike blew up the controller. I haven't been out yet to look at it but he said it's blown to pieces. They also lost the alarm system, TV's, computers, garage door openers, etc.

He feels the sprinkler system is to blame because it has the most physical damage and thinks it came in through the field wiring and than through the transformer to the rest of the house.

I've repaired quite a few systems due to lightning strikes but I never thought about it being the cause to fry other equipment. Is this even possible?

Might be possible. If it entered in through the field wires. But, sheet, it's friggin' lightning. It's nature. These things happen. Is he trying to blame you? Tell him to take a hike if so. Sheet happens.

Lightning does any damn thing it wants to - if you want to be unaffected by lightning, live off the power grid run a hydraulically-controlled sprinkler system.

No, he's not blaming me whatsoever but I did replace the clock 7 years ago. He just wants to know if there is anyway to prevent it.

All the valves in the house, with no field wires in the ground. Then each lateral goes out the wall or foundation. Believe me, I've seen it. :) 12 zone system. All in the basement, 12 holes drilled through the wall.

Let the guy recover from his insurance company - that's what you buy it for.

He is but there is always that deductible. I just would like to be able to tell him if there's a good solution to prevent it from happening again.

  10. Lightning is hotter than the sun. One of the most powerful forces in nature. Seems to me his only sure option is to unplug everything before every storm. I'm going through one helluva storm right now. The water sheets were unbelievable. I'll take a pic of the hail pile up.
