I don't recommend using sound on a webpage, but there are some exceptions...
The first thing I do when I go to a webpage that automatically plays music is close it! I hate it!!
If it is just a little clip about 5 seconds or less, thats not so bad...
If you use it on a hover button, it might be cool. A hover button is a picture link that when you hold the cursor over, it will change colors or make a noise.

PS - this doesn't work with Netscape, only IE.

Sound on a web page drives a fair portion of visitors away.
One of the "big companies" around here website sings a song when you open it. I literally want to claw my ears out it's so bad and annoying.
I agree with the rollover button, though, that might be kind of neat.
