So as many of you know, paver Pete recommends installing stairs against a house as a self supporting 'square' for lack of a better word. We have always installed a length of SRW along the back of the steps in front of the foundation wall... We have never put a 1.5-2" gap between this 'wall' and the foundation however. The more I think about it I now understand the reasoning for air flow, and moisture... but what I don't ever understand is, what does a stair system look like with a 2" gap between it and the house?? Anytime Pete has mentioned this method, he has never talked about hiding a 2" gap between the stairs and the house, or a picture???? Also if there is a gap at the top landing and the house, do the pavers also leave a 2" gap between the top landing and the house? I want to start installing like this, I just dont understand how to make a 2" gap not look like the stairs have separated from the house.
