ok so i did some searching on the "mites" that have appeared in my worm bin. they are the little brown/red mites that are talked about frequently. is there any way to keep them inside the darn bin? in one post tim wilson talks about airflow to the bin controlling them. i put a small fan blowing towards the bin for a few days and it seems to help, but not completely. my bin is only about 5 weeks old, its a 30 gallon storage bin, with about 30 1/4" holes onthe bottom covered with landscape fabric, and 15 3/4" holes in the upper parts above the material level. i keep the lid on. it is sitting on some pvc pipe to keep it about an inch off the floor of the container under it. i am getting no leachate coming from the bottom, so i didnt think it was a moisture issue, but i could be wrong? if i keep the fan running it dries the material inside the bin so bad i have to add a little water. if i remove the fan, i get small amounts of moisture on the inside of the lid and the material gets noticeably wetter. these mites are running all over my kitchen, and multiplying by the thousands every week it seems. the worms seem to be happy, growing rapidly and laying eggs. i wish they would eat faster though!
