Too much water. Stir it up to dry out some.

Ya, till it up and let it dry out and get some O2.

Is it mold your seeing or Mycelium (SP?) (mushroom roots)

Do you have a picture? I have some interesting growth on a mulch job I did about a month ago, and I was wondering the same thing.

It's a good year for slime mold, I've had it pretty badly this year too. Lately everything has dried out and I'm not seeing it so much. Luckily it doesn't hurt any plants and is benificial, but, it's fugly.
