I have a customer of mine that mowed into a house with heavy woods all around. They moved in 1968 and haven't trimmed back the trees at all. The oak trees are slowly taken over this property. I tell them unless they have those trees thinned out. I can dethach the property every year but it is more like a bandade. Is there anything else I can do

Drainage and sun are the best bets. However You can use iron to kill off the moss before you dethatch.
Thin out the trees some and get better drainage in there is the best bet.
Other than that there will always be at least some moss.

It's gotten to the point that 85% of the backyard has way to much coverage from the trees with little sunlight and moisture is always present
