mouse or rat? http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos...63543653_100000003010096_582152_2256515_n.jpg
My aunt caught it in her garden down in Florida and my cousin wanted to know....I'm leaning toward mouse....but just wanted to be sure...
who cares, both nasty. Looks like rat. Our mice here are different. hahaah.
I have never been great with pictures but my 2 cents is on (Rattus rattus) Roof Rat. I am basing this First on the round ear shape and then the more pointed nose and larger eyes than a Norway Rat which is also common here in Florida. Both Mice and Norway Rats have more pointed ears and smaller eyes.
Positive ID would be the length of the tail. If the tail is longer than the Head and Body combined, then it is Rattus rattus or a Roof Rat.
Drowning a rats is illegal in Florida as is Letting a Nuisance vertebrate wildlife go or relocated. By Law Squirrels, Raccoons, Rats etc trapped as a Pest must be euthanized or kept in a cage. But they must be euthanized humanly. Freezing or gassing with Carbon Monoxide or Carbon Dioxide is legal as is Nitrogen fixation. Shooting them fall into Gun Laws of Discharging a Firearm and can carry a heavy fine. Trying to shoot an animal inside a trap can be dangerous and might take several shots. I find a Hose from my Exhaust pipe to a trap under a blanket does the trick.
BTW Under Florida Law Trapping Rodents is not illegal or does it require a license of any kind. However to poison them does require a General Household Pesticide License.
As a Nuisance Wildlife Trapper list with the FWC. I still do some trapping of vertebrate including Poisonous snakes which are vertebrate. BTW the Roof Rat would make a good Snake Bait in a Trap.

This Norway Rat was chewing on my Organic Ferts.

Thanks for all the input guys...I'm gonna go with the popular opinion of rat.
Looks like my daughter in law. I say a rat!
Nice rat. Personally like the venerable Victor snap trap for rats. OR one of these guys :
Good ole red box.
Have to keep it out of the path of squirrels but boy does it work. Might even bust your finger at the joint if your not careful.
