I've been using them for several years on motorcycles and other power equipment. It's good insurance and one less thing to worry about when it comes time to start using them again. I buy the quick disconnect adapters at a cycle shop for about $6 so I don't have to mess with covers, clips, etc. when connecting or disconnecting.

It is a good idea. Another thing you have to watch for are really cold temperatures. If the electrolyte in the battery freezes the battery is junk. You're much better off storing the battery where there is no chance of below freezing temps.
