Roger- The nephew could have entered anyway. Yes the alarm would have gone off, but it should have silenced on its own after awhile. The FD would have notified Law Enforcement dispatch beforehand to avoid the issues on the PD side since the nephew was listed on the alarm contact list... just my thoughts.
This thread is making me rethink the use of mulch around my house too!
stebs, you are probably right about the alarm.
The urgency was less when the FD was certain the fire would not have passed through the piping openings in the foundation.
However, the lesson of giving the emergency contact BOTH the key and the code should be taken to heart.
