In mulching a flower bed, do you typically cultivate the soil?

Also, do you use a pre-emergent coupled with a weed barrier fabric, or just one or the other?

    Thanks,

I tilled my large area the first year but it had nothing to go around except a tree. I now just hit the weeds that come up through mulch with round up and call it a day. If your garden has bulbs and or flower I would treat the weed areas while dormant if you can.

Take out all the weeds, ut down a pre-m and mulch. Fabric is useless in my book.

I agree about the fabric...What fabric does is show its ugly face when mulch gets thin!

Agree with above, fabric is for rock in my book. It just acts like a dirt holder when the mulch breaks down. Pre-emergent if the customer wants it at an added cost. No we dont do anything to the soil except cover it.
