is the mulch kit really necessary on the metro 36 or 48...as opposed to just side discharging?...my dealer said that I don't really need the mulch kit since the blade speed is high enough to essentially "mulch" the clippings. what's your opinion?

Your dealer is partially right. Yes, our deck design does chop the clippings smaller than some design when side discharging. Is this mulch? No not really.

Mulching is more than just chopping the clippings to a fine consistency. When mulching you not only need to chop the clippings into smaller particles but you must also deposit them deep into the turf where they can break down, decompose and do all those wonderful things for the lawn and soil.

When side discharging the clippings lay on top of the lawn where they can not decompose as rapidly or completely as they will with the mulch kit. These clippings can also turn brown in a day or two hiding the lush green lawn below.

If you really want to mulch and return the nutrients in the clippings to the lawn the mulch kit is by far the best way to go. If youÂ’re only concerned about the size of the clippings on the lawn the standard set up may be all you need.

You might want to take a look at the links in the "resource" secion of our website on mulching. There are a couple of links that detail the advantages of mulching. The only way to take full advantage of the recycled clippings is with the mulch kit. Here's a short cut to the resource section: http://www.exmark.com/TheResource.htm
