I've got a customer that wants me to re-do some flower beds. The guy that did them didn't put anything under the mulch and they have weeds growing up all in them. The only thing in the beds is monkeygrass. What would be the best technique for this? She wants to reuse the mulch and save the monkeygrass.

We don't use fabric or plastic either. We use Newspaper, cardboard, or nothing.

I never liked using plastic or fabric under mulch, as in my opinion, it maked the weeds worse because the as the mulch rots and decomposes, you essentially have dirt sitting on top of that plastic. In most cases, 4" of mulch with a good application of a pre-m like preen or snapshot will work fine.
