I am about to purchase new blades for my personal-use Crapsman 18 hp 42" tractor. I have always used either the bagger or the side discharge. I want to mulch now. Am I better off to put a mulching kit on or go to dual blades as I've read about in the commercial forum? Thanks in advance.

if it will take doubles try a high lift and standard combo.
make sure the chute is completly open as the idea is better grass
dispersment. the 18 hp ought to work pretty good with a 42 deck.
one thing is that the bottum blade does most of the cutting so needs to be real sharp.

I just serviced my neighbor's 42" Crapsman. I wouldn't put double blades on those types of machines, they're not built the same as the commercial machines we're putting double blades on in the other forum. You can buy "mulching" blades and use the side discharge, which would do essentially the same thing as buying a "mulching kit". Mulching blades for that will have bends in it instead of being flat. They work fine.
