Does lava rock provide the same level of weed prevention as an organic mulch. It seems porous. Does it provide the same level of "weed smothering"?

In my limited experience with it, it offers little of nothing in the way of weed prevention or moisture retention. If your customer has to have it, you'll need weed block below it, or you'll have a mess.

I would try to encourage organic mulch.

Lava rock doesn't have any advantage over organic mulch and the weeds will grow on the rock. It's not any fun when you send a rock flying with your trimmer either.

Lava rock is the got to be the stupidest thing you can add to you landscape. Pain in the ars to clean grass out of. Rocks are lite and get flung around with the trimmer. Just a big pita. Try to stay away from it.
