what is your guess?
I thought I knew the genus, so I did a search. I did not know the species, but did know the genus. I don't want to post it and ruin the fun for the next guy.
I love this tree. I saw a very mature specimen at a Japanese garden in Seattle, Washington a few years back. An absolutely stunning tree. The bark and fall color is absolutely amazing.

They had one at the nursery this yr. From what the owner told they are very rare in the state of NY. Really nice size too, 12'-14'.
When I lived back in Idaho we could get them regularly at the nurseries. One of my all time favorite trees.
