i figured i would put this on here just to get some opinions! can anyone name this bush or shrub?
Yup, those are nandinas.
whats the best way to prune/trim these?
I dont usually trim them or shear them like boxwoods or other shrubs I prune to the ground about a quarter of the stems randomly throughout the plant. Then prune about a quarter of the remaining stems at one-third the height of the plant. Next, prune about one quarter of the stems two-third of the height of the plant. Leave the final quarter of the stems uncut. Do it in late winter early spring they are pretty maintanence free after that.
Nandinas don't really shape well other than the "gulf stream". At this point I would cut them back to about 6-12 inches and individuals. Let them flush back out and do a little pruning periodically.
